Where can I purchase FreshRAW single protein cat and dog food?
FreshRAW can be found in various pet stores, including Petbarn.
Is the food complete and balanced?
Yes, we have created a naturopathic blend that not only meets, but exceeds the AAFCO and FEDIAF standards for pet nutrition.
How do you preserve the food?
Our food has no preservatives, but is frozen to maintain the nutrient values. Research has shown that frozen foods do retain their nutrient component for longer than fresh, unfrozen foods.
Garlic is toxic, why do you use it?
As with many foods, herbs and spices, garlic has many health benefits when fed in moderation. Garlic is widely reported to be toxic for dogs and cats, however research conducted on the effects of garlic has been based on garlic extracts and excessive dosage rates. Garlic in very small doses has excellent health benefits for both dogs and cats. The documented benefits for the use of fresh, raw garlic include reduced formation of blood clots (anti-platelet), decreased cholesterol build up (anti-cholesterol emic), aiding prevention of tumours (anti-tumour), stimulates the lymphatic system to remove waste and is said to have antibiotic, antifungal and anti-parisitic benefits. The National Academy of Sciences published a report in 2008 compiled by National Research Council of America, who have assessed the safe intake levels of garlic for dogs and cats. They conclude a safe daily level of 22mg per kilogram of body weight in dogs and 17mg per kilogram of body weight for cats. Our inclusion rates fall well below this, at less than 1mg/kg for both cats and dogs.
What are seasonal fruits and vegetables?
There are times during the year that certain fruit and vegetables are not available or not at their best. Vegetables that have been stored for long periods of time in cold storage, tend to lose their goodness over time, so we only include market fresh vegetables. We add seasonal fruit and vegetables during their best growing season which are chosen for their specific nutrients, vitamins and minerals, ensuring our food is always balanced and also that our recipes are cost effective and do not fluctuate in price. A few examples of seasonal fruits and vegetables are: strawberries, blueberries, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, asian greens etc…
Why do you use sweet potato?
Sweet potato is a rich source of beta-carotene (antioxidant), fibre, vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium, selenium, B vitamins and vitamin C. Our inclusion rate is very low and less than 1%.
Where is your meat sourced from?
All our meat is sourced from reputable abattoirs throughout Victoria, which ensures we are buying from a trusted source. Both our suppliers and our factory are licensed with PrimeSafe, who are the governing body responsible for conducting audits and checks for both meat suppliers and manufacturing facilities.
Is your meat free range or grass fed?
While we love the idea of sourcing only organic, grass fed and free range meat, sometimes this is not possible. But we do source our meat from reputable abattoirs throughout Victoria, which ensures we are buying from a trusted source. Both our suppliers and our factory are licensed with PrimeSafe, who are the governing body responsible for conducting audits and checks for both meat suppliers and manufacturing facilities.
Do we need to add anything to the food?
Our food is already complete and balanced and suitable for all breeds and ages. However, there may be times when your pet requires additional support with supplements to maintain high energy, health challenges or age related issues. During these times we recommend using our natural supplements range to round off the diet.
Can you cook the food?
We strongly recommend serving our food raw as we can only guarantee the nutrient values in its raw form. Cooking changes the nutrient levels of all foods.
How much of each ingredient is in the food?
Understanding the exact percentage of each ingredient is not particularly helpful, but we can give you the overall percentage of each food group: Dogs – 70% meat, 10% bone, 10% vegetables, 5% offal, 4% fruits, 1% other (lentils, turmeric, garlic, seaweed). Cats – 75% meat, 10% bones, 5% vegetables, 5% offal, 4% fruits, 1% other (lentils, turmeric, garlic, seaweed).
Why use vegetables in cat food and dog food?
Fruit & vegetables are used to naturally add vitamins and minerals that are not present in meat alone. All the fruit and veg is pureed to ensure they are easily digested, where the meat is minced. These equate to less than 10% of the overall recipe. Meat is quite high and equates to 90% of the diet. When cats naturally hunt, they will consume the gut and digestive tract of their prey who are consuming seed, fruit, veg etc… We prefer to use natural ingredients rather than adding synthetic vitamins and minerals.
What are the carbohydrate levels in your cat and dog food?
Our complete nutritional analysis is available on our website as well as on packaging. Our carbohydrate levels are very low, Fish is less than 0.5%, Beef is less than 0.5%, Kangaroo is less than 0.5% and Chicken is less than 1.8%. At NAS, we believe that all nutritional analysis should be readily available.
